Tel Aviv Stock Market Closes Four Hours Early, Citing "The Beach Is Right There"
Economists say the early closure had no measurable impact. "Everyone was already at the beach," confirmed one economist, also at the beach.
The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange closed trading at 11:47 AM on Wednesday, four hours and thirteen minutes ahead of schedule, following what a spokesperson described as "a general consensus that it was a very good beach day." The decision was made by committee, which sources say reached agreement unusually quickly.
Markets responded to the closure with what analysts called "characteristic indifference." The shekel held steady. Several traders described the early closure as "overdue" and noted that productivity in the final two hours of a beach day was "not meaningfully different from zero." One trader said he had been thinking about the beach since approximately 9 AM and considered the closure "a formality at this point."
The exchange has not issued formal guidance on future beach-related closures. Unofficially, sources say the threshold is "you'll know it when you see it." Meteorologists say next Tuesday also looks promising. The exchange has declined to comment on next Tuesday.
